The Underground Chamizal National Memorial Lesson Plan

This lesson plan is written specifically for students at Guillen Middle School and Bowie High School in El Paso, Texas—but can be revised for students elsewhere in El Paso. It provides historical context and synchronous/asynchronous lesson plans and activities for educators interested in three main objectives:

  1. Develop students’ understanding of the shifting and contested nature of geopolitical borders

  2. Contextualize the Chamizal Dispute with the history of Texas, the city of El Paso, and this city’s historic neighborhood Segundo Barrio

  3. Guide students to work collaboratively and across grade levels on a digital final project.

The first, synchronous half of the lesson plans (Lessons 1-7) are designed to be taught to Guillen and Bowie classrooms independently. The second, asynchronous half is designed to bring these grade levels together in group digital project.
